REXX Uniform Coding
Style (RUCS) |
|
PPT |
4 hours |
Mainframe |
|
Like most programming languages, REXX does
not impose any coding style on programmers. You can code an instruction on
one or more lines, indent it to your liking add comments or not, choose
variable names using your imagination.
However, the coding style (or lack
thereof) that you choose can make a BIG difference in the amount of effort
to write, debug, read and maintain your program. I have developed a style
over the years that reduces coding errors by a factor of magnitude,
increases the readability of programs significantly, and vastly improves
maintainability.
This session gives an overview of RUCS,
the REXX Uniform Coding Style I suggest automation programmers use
consistently.

Balanced between theory and practice, this
session teaches the three basic concepts of REXX (instructions, variables,
simple logic structures). This session is meant for people who dabbled
already in REXX but think they lack a solid foundation, or never had any
formal training in REXX. Students will see, make and learn to recognize, as
well as correct some of the more common mistakes beginners make in REXX
programming. This session is meant for students who want the basic theory of
REXX programming as well as the hands-on practice. |

Generic Approaches to
Automation Programming |
|
PPT |
4 hours |

|
Many automation specialists are excellent
in developing specific solutions to specific problems. Few specialists,
however, are skilled in developing generic solutions that apply to many
problems. Generic programming allows you to develop
"write-once-use-many-times" solutions that not only save time but also are
more robust. This presentation presents four generic solutions to a slew of
common problems that CA-OPS/MVS programmers face. The solutions presented
are part of the PI-REXX Toolkit. (75 slides) |

OPS/REXX includes the powerful PARSE
instruction which can be used to scan command responses. This session will
explain all variations of the PARSE instruction in a simple and easy to
understand format. In addition, real examples will be shown on
 |
how to actually use parse to: scan JCL
keywords for specific values |
 |
process multi-column report output
|
 |
handle non-blank delimited words
|
 |
scan LISTCAT output |
 |
find pertinent information in VTAM cmd
responses |
